Huntington Beach, Calif. - The 2022 Golden West Rustler football season opener is this Saturday in the 54th annual Battle of the Bell against Orange Coast College with a 12pm kickoff.
Golden West leads the all-time series 31-22, having kept the Bell the last 9 of 10 seasons. The Rustlers are coming off their best season in program history after finishing 11-1 overall and 5-0 in National Southern League action to capture their first title. Orange Coast comes into the 2022 season after finishing 3-7 overall last season and 2-3 in the American Metro League.
The always tough defense returns 2021 Second Team All-Southern' League selections Elisha Martin (DL), Prince Ford (CB), and Khilyn Neal (LB). The Rustlers defense will look to continue their tough play and remain one of the elite defenses in the state.
The offense returns a pair of First Team All-Southern' League selections in wide out Nick Kennewell and running back Jared Johnson. Kennewell hauled in 42 receptions for 655 yards last season while Johnson tallied 72 rushes for 330 and another 25 catches for an additional 305 yards.
