Men’s Soccer Opens Season with a 4-1 Victory

Huntington Beach, Calif. – The Rustlers started the 2016 campaign at home Friday afternoon with an impressive 4-1 win over San Diego City College Knights.

Golden West controlled the ball for most of the match, with many opportunities to score in the first half but just couldn't find the back of the net. The offense finally got on the board when Ivan Pineda scored off a beautifully timed corner kick from Brian Montano at the 46th minute in the second half to take the lead 1-0.

Freshman Steven Carrera scored his first goal (53:00) of the season on a through ball from Anthony Saldana. Saldana followed the assist with a goal (57:00) of his own 4 minutes later on a through ball from Jose Gomez to give the Rustlers a 3-0 lead. Carrera netted his second goal of the match at the 68th minute assisted by Jesse Salgado.

The Knights scored their only goal late in the second half to prevent the Golden West shutout.

NEXT: Golden West will travel to Long Beach City College to take on the Knights with a scheduled kickoff at 4PM
