M Volleyball: Coleman and Flores Help Rustlers Prevail in OEC Opener

Huntington Beach, Calif. - The Golden West men's volleyball team avoided the reverse sweep as they opened Orange Empire Conference play with a 3-2 victory over Santiago Canyon 25-19, 25-18, 19-25, 24-26, 15-9. 

The Rustlers (6-4, 1-0) controlled the pace of play and momentum in the first two sets as they were able to take a 2-0 lead with the chance to open OEC play with a convincing sweep. The Hawks (7-3, 0-1) had other thoughts in mind as they were able to rattle off come from behind set wins in both the third and fourth sets to force a fifth and deciding set. 

Outside hitter Matthew Coleman led the Rustlers with 17 kills and 13 digs and opposite Miguel Flores Jr. was right behind him with 13 kills to aide in the win. Setter Brandon Pank did all he could do as he tallied 37 assists to go along with his 7 kills and team high 5 solo blocks. 

Next: Golden West will travel to the CCCAA #1 ranked Orange Coast College on Frida, March 16 for a 6pm start.
