Softball: Offense Continues to Struggle in Doubleheader Sweep

Huntington Beach, Calif. - The Golden West softball squad continues to try and shake off the rust after nearly 13 months off as they are swept 11-2 and 8-3 to Saddleback College.

In game one Golden West kept things close until the fourth inning when Saddleback took advantage of an early error and then rattled off five straight hits to score six runs to take a commanding 9-0 lead. The Rustler offense would finally rattle off a couple of singles by Jazmine Rodriguez and Sennie Viramontes to set up a bases loaded and no out rally. The clean-up hitter, Lali Rios had a chance to give Golden West the momentum when she reach base on a fielding error by the Saddleback third baseman that scored two runs. Unfortunately, that would be all the offense they could muster cutting the lead to 9-2 after four innings. Saddleback added two more runs in the sixth inning to enforce the mercy victory 11-2.

Game two was a little different as the defense stiffened up and the offense started to catch up to Saddlebacks flame throwing ace. Jasmine Vasquez led the offensive attack going 2 for 3 with her first double and triple of the 2021 season. Lali Rios got the start in the circle as she went 2.2 innings giving up five runs and nine hits. Michelle Sheedy had a good relief outting to keep the game close throwing the final 4.1 innings and surrendering three runs on eight hits while striking out one. Ultimately, Golden West fell in game two 8-3 after scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
