Rustlers Advance to SoCal Regional Finals After Gritty 1-0 Road Victory at Cypress
CYPRESS, Calif. — The Golden West College women's soccer team continued its remarkable postseason run on Tuesday afternoon, earning a hard-fought 1–0 victory over the No. 4 seeded Cypress College Chargers in the Third Round of the 3C2A SoCal Regional Playoffs.
With the win, the Rustlers (15-4-6) advance to the SoCal Regional Finals and will travel to top-seeded Saddleback College on Saturday, November 29 for a 7 p.m. kickoff with a trip to the state championships on the line.
For the second straight match, sophomore midfielder Kaylee Gomez delivered the game-winner. In the 49th minute, Gomez capitalized on a second-chance ball at the top of the box and buried an unassisted strike to give Golden West a 1–0 advantage.
Goalkeeper Sierra Carter was sensational, anchoring a Rustler defensive unit that withstood relentless pressure. Carter recorded eight saves, several from close range, earning her third postseason shutout.
The Chargers outshot Golden West 17–3, including 13 shots on goal, but the Rustlers' back line led by Jada Overton, Kiersten Mahan, Mia Guerra, and Giana Ortenzo held firm throughout the 90 minutes.
The playoff intensity showed as the match featured five yellow cards, including three issued in the second half. Despite the physicality and a heavy offensive push from Cypress, the Rustlers stayed composed, disciplined, and committed defensively.
Golden West now prepares for its toughest test yet in a regional final clash against No. 1 seed Saddleback College, who will host Saturday night's showdown in Mission Viejo.
A win would send the Rustlers to the 3C2A State Championships for the first time in program history.
