Rustlers score early, hold on for win

Golden West got out to an early lead and held Chaffey at bay to earn the opening day victory by a score of 5-2 at Hoover Field.

Right out of the gate, Golden West (1-0) started scoring rapidly thanks to a one-run first inning and 2 runs in the second and third innings for a total of 5 runs. No Rustlers would cross the plate after that, but 5 runs were enough for starting pitcher Isaiah Terrazas (1-0).

The Cypress high school product carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning and would end up surrendering 7 hits, including a home run by designated hitter Tyler Shoenfeld, and Chaffey's (0-1) only 2 runs. Relief pitchers James Norman and Michael Farris, who started the game at third base, finished the game and prevented the Panthers from scoring any more runs. Norman earned a hold for his effort, and Farris picked up the save.

Hitting was aplenty in this game as Golden West recorded 10 knocks. First baseman Jordan Lucio was the star hitter going 4-for-5 on the day and drove in 2 runs. Farris was also quite helpful at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double.

Golden West continues its young season on Thursday with a home game against Palomar.
