Baseball Opens 2017 Season

Huntington Beach, Calif. – The Golden West College baseball team opened the 2017 season against Palomar College this past weekend. After finishing last season as the state championship runner-up, the Rustlers are looking to continue their success in 2017.

Sophomore Taylor Franzman (0-1) was on the mound for the Rustlers and started out with three scoreless innings. Then Palomar caught up to Franzman's timing to score three runs on three hits in the fourth. Franzman would settled down and the offense would finally provide a little momentum when Ryan Carpenter (1 for 3, 1 run scored) led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double. Jeremiah Vison (1 for 3, 1 walk) would ground out to advance Carpenter to third and Louie Conjura (1 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 walk) would hit a double to score Carpenter. That would cut the lead to 3-1, but Palomar would respond with a three run seventh inning to build a 6-1 lead. Palomar would score a run in the eighth and ninth inning to secure the win 8-1.

Saturday's game saw the Rustlers(0-2) travel to Palomar(2-0) for a rematch from Friday afternoons loss. The Rustler offense woke up as they took an early 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of second inning. Palomar would respond with four runs in the bottom half of the frame. It was a pitchers dual till the bottom of the ninth inning as the Rustlers held on to a 6-5 lead, Palomar's Cameron Haskell hit a two-run walk-off homerun for the 7-6 come from behind victory.

NEXT: The Rustlers(0-2) will travel to the College of Sequoias Thursday February 2nd for a 2PM first pitch.
