Baseball: Offense Struggles to Score in Doubleheader Sweep

Huntington Beach, Calif. - The Golden West baseball team struggled offensively to score runs in a doubleheader sweep to visiting Grossmont College 5-0 and 6-4.

GAME 1

The Rustlers (3-4) got blanked by the Griffins (4-1) pitching staff in the run column as they were only able to move two runners in scoring position all game. Golden West out hit Grossmont 7 to 6 in the ball game that took just over two hours to complete. Starter Micah Wallette threw 7 and 1/3 solid innings giving up two earned runs, five runs total, while striking out seven Griffins. Ezele Wicks recorded the Rustlers only multi hit game as he went 2 for 4 with two singles.

GAME 2

Grossmont's offense exploded for 16 hits in game two as they were able to jump on the Rustlers early with a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Finally, in the bottom of the fourth inning the Rustler offense put some runs on the scoreboard as they cut into the lead 5-2. Justin Simpson got things started with a single, then Seth Nelson would pop out, leading to a Zakk Morgan single to spark some life into the Rustler dugout. Simpson and Morgan would advance to the second and third base on a passed ball to allow Jesse Fonteboa to ground out to the shortstop and score Simpson for the Rustlers first run on the day. Jeff Zordani followed Fonteboa with an RBI single to score the second run of the inning for Golden West.

The Griffins would score another run which would prove to be a much needed insurance run in the top of the sixth to extend their lead 6-2. The Rustlers put the pressure on in the bottom of the eighth inning when they were able to score two more runs and cut the lead to 6-4. They would take advantage of an error and a wild pitch to plate those two runs but leave two runners on base that could've tied that game. Both teams went quietly in the final frame for a very anti-climatic finish.

Golden West was led offensively by Zakk Morgan who went 2 for 5 with a double and Jeff Zordani who went 2 for 4 with a pair of singles and a RBI.

NEXT: Golden West will host Cerritos College at 12pm (noon) tomorrow at Fred Hoover Field.
