Baseball: Offense Explodes as Wicks and Zordani Go Deep

Huntington Beach, Calif. - The cold crisp air had the baseball flying around Friday afternoon as Golden West's offense exploded in their win over Glendale College 15-4.

Four Rustlers (8-4) recorded multi hit games highlight by sophomore Jeff Zordani going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI's on a double and a solo home run. Teammate and freshman Jesse Fonteboa also recorded a three hit game while driving in two runs on two doubles.

The game started out sluggish as the first couple innings saw each team try to catch the rythym of the pitcher, until the third inning that saw the Vaqueros (6-5) get on the scoreboard with a solo homerun. The Rustlers would fire right back in the bottom of the frame to take the lead 2-1 when Fonteboa smashed a double to left center field scoring a run. Two batters later, Seth Nelson hit a sacrifive fly to centerfield to plate the second run on the inning to give the Rustlers a 2-1 lead. Glendale would tie the game up in the top half of the fifth inning with another solo homerun.

The bottom of the fifth is when the Rustlers offense exploded for seven runs on four hits that started with a solo homerun from Zordani to lead off. Fonteboa then hit one of his two doubles that led to a pitching change for the Vaqueros. The relief pitcher for Glendale didn't record an out as he walked three of the four Rustlers he faced before being pulled. Golden West would take advantage of a passed ball and another walk to extend its lead to 9-2. The offense continued to stay hot in the sixth inning when Nelson doubled home Austin Schell following his lead off double and then Ezele Wicks crushed a 3-run homer to give the Rustlers a 13-2 lead.

Golden West never looked worried for the rest of the game as the pitching staff handled it the rest of the way en route to the 15-4 win.

Next: Golden West will travel to Glendale College for a scheduled first pitch at noon on Saturday February 23rd.
