Rustler's Season Opens With A Win In Overtime

Santa Clarita, Calif. - Golden West's Rustler football went head to head with College of the Canyons Cougars Saturday, September 1, 2012 for their season opener and came out victorious with a 25-19 win in over time.

In the first quarter No. 83, Brett Beighton (Anaheim, CA/Los Alamitos HS) completed a 40-yard field goal for the first score of the game. Canyons responded with a 29-yard field goal, tying the score 3-3 at the end of the quarter. In the second the Cougars completed a 21-yard field goal bringing the score to 6-3.

The first touchdown of the game came after the half for the Cougars with a punt return. The Rustlers responded with a 98-yard extra point return by Malcolm Smith No. 13(Long Beach, CA/Wilson HS ) . Beginning the 4th quarter, the Rustlers came back with 13-play drive for 67-yards in 3:50. Zackary Couey No. 4 (Huntington Beach, CA/Marina HS) completed his pass to No. 2 Ryan Watson (Decatur, AL/Austin HS) for a touchdown. The extra point from Peter Marquez, No. 81(Costa Mesa, CA/Costa Mesa HS) was good, tying the score 12-12. With 00:35 left on the clock, Zackary Couey found Ryan Watson again in the end zone with a 33-yard pass. Marquez came through again and brought the Rustlers up 19-12.  In the last second of the game however, Canyons completed a 28-yard pass to score, and with the extra point, the game ended in a tie.

With the game in over time, Couey scored with a 5 play drive for 25-yards, ending the game with a score of 25-19.

The Rustlers take to the field again on Saturday, Sept 8 at LA Harbor, kick off is at 6:00PM.
