Golden West Takes Down the Griffins

Golden West Takes Down the Griffins

El Cajon, Calif. - The no.6 ranked Rustlers travelled to no.15 Grossmont College Saturday and came away with a commanding 17-7 win in the Southern Conference opener for both schools.

Adam Vance got Golden West (4-0) on the scoreboard first with a 21-yard TD pass to WR Jordan Veasy in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter kicker Humberto Maciel added a field goal to increase the lead 10-0, and the Rustlers would hold the lead going into the half.

The third quarter opened up with a grinding 6 minute drive by the Rustler offense and ultimate 11-yard strike from Vance to Veasy, again, to make it 17-0.

The difference in the game came from the Rustler defense. Grossmont had been one of the leading scoring offenses in the state averaging 45 points per game. The GWC defense held the Grossmont offense to 0 points up until 5 minutes left in the game. Grossmont scored their only touchdown after a Golden West fumble on their own 4-yard line. The Griffins were able to punch it in from 4 yards out – but they would get no more.

Sophomore LB Jake Jiannoni, sophomore DL Frank Larriva and freshman CB Kory Garcia led the way for the Rustler defense.

Golden West now stands at 4-0 and will host perennial power Fullerton College next Saturday at LeBard stadium for a 6pm kick off.
