Rustler's Couldn't Answer the Call in Loss

Cerritos, Calif. - On Saturday night, Golden West College (2-2) had an answer for Cerritos College (2-2) in three of the four quarters. The third quarter saw the Falcons score nine unanswered points on their way to a 36-23 victory.

The Ruslters would get on the scoreboard first when Alfonso Vergara kicked a 30yd field on the teams first possession. Cerritos answered back with a touchdown late in the first quarter to take the lead 7-3. The second quarter saw both teams trade touchdowns as the Falcons headed into the locker rooms with a 14-10 lead at half. Golden West's wideout Derrick Deese caught a six yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Pyle with three seconds on the clock before halftime.

Cerritos would score the next 15 points to take a 29-10 lead as they got the second half started when the Rustlers started at their own 6-yard line after James Baldwin III handled the opening kickoff along the sideline and stepped out of bounds. On the first play from scrimmage, the ball was snapped over Pyle's head and he was tackled in the end zone for a safety. Then after trading a couple of possessions the Falcons would score again on a 32 yard run from running back Querale Hall.

Golden West's offense finally found a rythm in the beginning of the fourth quarter as John Buksa took over at quarterback and completed a nine yard touchdown pass to Xavier Smith to cut into the lead 29-17 with 6:40 to go in the game. Again both teams would trade possessions before Cerritos found the endzone for the final time to extend their lead 36-17. The Rustlers would answer right back when Buksa connected with Smith for the second time in the quarter, this time a 22 yard touchdown reception with 55 seconds to go. Golden West down 36-23 attempted an onside kick but couldn't come up with ball and Cerritos kneeled the final two plays as the clock expired.

NEXT: Golden West will host Long Beach City College Saturday, September 30th with kickoff scheduled for 1pm.
