Football: Offense Explodes for 48 Points in First Win of Season

Huntington Beach, Calif. - The Golden West College football team recorded it's first win on the season Saturday afternoon against West Los Angeles College 48-12.

The offense certainly found its rythym early as the Rustlers started the game with a two play scoring drive that covered 53 yards and ended with a 19 yard rushing touchdown by Tevon Valdez. Valdez would record his second touchdown on the very next Rustler possession from 15 yards out this time to extend the lead 14-0 in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter Golden West would build on its lead some more but through the air this time. Freshman quarterback Nathaniel Espinoza connected on a 24 yard touchdown strike to wide out Shashi Penn to make it a 21-0 lead. West LA would respond with its best drive of the day against the stingy Rustler defense. The Wildcats were able to drive 55 yards on eight plays to cut into the Rustler lead 21-6 after a failed extra point attempt.

After trading a couple series without a score, Golden West quarterback Beau Kalbacher threw a 14 yard touchdown pass to Brailon Mouton with 28 seconds left in the first half for a 28-6 halftime lead.

The offense came out of halftime fired up as they scored on all three of their possessions in the third quarter to put the game out of reach for West LA College. Running back Dante Swayne rushed for the first touchdown of the quarter from three yards out after Valdez ripped his longest run of the game, a 45 yard rush to start the drive. Then the big play hit as Espinoza connected with speedster wide out David Atencio for a 70 yard touchdown pass to make it a 41-6 ball game. The final score of the quarter came from Kalbachers arm as he connected with Jonathan Earl for a 35 yard touchdown.

The offense overall produced 537 total yards, 354 yards passing, and 183 yards on the ground. Kalbacher led the quarterbacks throwing for 243 yards and connected on 15 of his 19 attempts for two touchdowns. Valdez led the running backs with 98 yards on 6 carries for an astonishing 16.3 yards a touch and scoring twice. Wide out Shashi Penn lead the receiving corps with 6 cataches for 98 yards and a touchdown. Not to far behind Penn was Atencio with three catches for 82 yards and touchdown.

NEXT: Golden West will host Bakersfield College on Satuday, September 22 for a 2pm kickoff.
