Cerritos, Calif. - The Golden West College football team finished the season with a disappointing 21-9 loss to Cerritos College in the Southern California Bowl.
Leading 3-0 in the first quarter, Cerritos would put the next 14 points on the board before the end of the first quarter. On the first drive for Golden West, they put together a methodical 11 play 57 yard drive that ended with a 32 yard field goal from kicker Jose Arredondo. The Falcons got the ball deep in Rustler territory after David Atencio tried to return a punt but fumbled the ball at the Golden West nine-yard line. Cerritos would score on a rushing touchdown on the very next play but the Rustlers would block the extra point to make it a 6-3 game.
Both teams traded turnovers deep in each other's territory, with linebacker V.J Malo forcing a fumble and Steven Cruz falls on a football at the Falcons two-yard line. Cerritos then forced a fumble by the Rustlers QB Beau Kalbacher on a bad snap. Golden West would recover as it fell on another fumble ending a threat from the Cerritos offense that stopped the drive at the Golden West five-yard line. The game would go scoreless in the second quarter after all the turnovers, with Cerritos holding a 14-3 lead.
Golden West scored their lone touchdown of the game after a blocked punt put them at the Cerritos 39-yard line. Kalbacher, the game's Offensive Most Valuable Player struck on the first play when he found Brailon Mouton open on the ride sideline for a touchdown.
The Falcons would immediately respond with a quick six play 75 yard touchdown drive to extend their lead 21-9 to start the fourth quarter.
With the Rustlers deep in Falcon territory early in the fourth quarter, Cerritos put together a goaline stop to really put the game in hand. They stopped running back Juwain Roper short of the end zone on first and goal and then stuffed V.J. Malo at the line of scrimmage on the next play. Cerritos limited Golden West to 19 rushing yards.
Golden West ends the season 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the National Southern League Division.
