Football: Defense Shuts Down SD Mesa, Offense Explodes in Second Half

San Diego, Calif. - The Golden West defense shuts down the San Deigo Mesa offense as they held them to 157 total yards of offense and negative 5 yards rushing in a blowout win 48-10. 

The Rustlers just shut down the running game and forced the Olympians to throw the ball into a very dangerous secondary. The defense tallied two takeaways with the big one in the fourth quarter when Marquis Brown-Leonard had a house call after intercepting a pass and returning 50 yards for the touchdown. Golden West also added three more sacks to continue to lead the state with 37 sacks in nine games. 

The offense had their second highest yardage output with 535 yards of total offense with quarterback Jake Retzlaff throwing for 310 yards on 22-36 attempts. The Rustlers rushed for 225 yards and three scores as Mike Carrillo, Gavin Shappell, and Retzlaff crossed the goaline to score. Torrance Wiseman (53 yards) and John Ojelabi (5 yard) caught touchdown passes in the fourth quarter from Retzlaff to put the game out of reach. 

With the win Golden West improves to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in National Southern League play and looks to clinch the league title in the final regular season game at home against Fullerton College (6-2, 3-0) at 12pm.
