Softball: Birdwell ends game in walk-off fashion, snaps six game losing streak

Huntington Beach, Calif. - An error free ball game for the Rustlers ended in a 5-4 walk-off win against Riverside on Friday, earning them their third win in Orange Empire Conference play.

"I love the way our defense played," Head Coach Mike Willey said. "When you play error free ball, you're gonna have a good chance of winning the game, and we played really well."

Catcher Sevin Birdwell went 1-for-4 with a RBI double in the fourth inning to start off the scoring for the Rustlers.

"I saw her making adjustments and trying to put the ball in play – getting on top of the ball rather than lifting the ball," Willey said.

Second baseman Helen Ludwig performed exceptionally well both on the field and in the box. She put up the go-ahead run in the fourth inning (2-1) after she drove in Birdwell with a single to center field.

"I think it's really nice to see Helen flourishing right now," Willey said. "Her parents are in town from Germany, and it's exciting to watch her play really well."

Starting pitcher Lali Rios earned her third win of the season after pitching 5 1/3 innings. She struck out three batters, walked five, allowed five hits, and one earned run.

Sennie Viramontes was in the circle for 1 2/3 innings, giving up three runs off four hits.

With the season coming to an end, Coach Willey hopes his team can continue playing with solid defense, hitting pitching locations, and having quality at-bats.

NEXT: The Rustlers will travel to Saddleback for a series finale on Monday starting at 2 p.m.
