Women's Swimming Takes 4th In The State

Los Angeles, Calif. - The Golden West College Men's and Women's Swimming Team competed at the CCCAA Swimming and Diving State Championships held at the East Los Angeles Swim Complex (ELAC).

Day 1

In the first event of the meet, the Rustlers edged out second place and fellow Orange Empire Conference foe Orange Coast by .18 of a second to take home 1st place in the women's 200-yard Freestyle Relay.  Golden West posted a time of 1:37.52 (Gabriela Cabrera, Saibrah White, Brooke Roy, Margaret Dix)

In the men's 200-yard Freestyle Relay the Rustlers (1:26.83) were able to move up a few spots with a lead off swim by Eddie Malick (21.64), Duncan Burrows (21.56), Luca De Vivo (21.60), andMiso Halac (22.03).

Golden West once again made their mark on the meet, when sophomore Jade Morton (4:57.32) shaved off eight seconds from her morning preliminary swim to comfortably win the 500-yard Freestyle in a margin of more than nine seconds faster than second-place finisher.

Freshman David Jorth took 2nd place in the men's 500-yard Freestyle consolation finals with a time of 4:45.92.

In the women's 100-yard Individual Medley, Freshman Gabriela Cabrera (59.39) took 3rd place, while Eddie Malick took 10th place in the men's 200 IM (1:54.65)

Margaret Dix (24.41) and Brooke Roy (25.38) placed third and thirteenth respectively in the 50-yard Freestlye.

Women's 400-yard Medley Relay:  Golden West (Margaret Dix, Taylor Morton, Gabriela Cabrera, Jade Morton) 4:05.06

Men's 400-yard Medley Relay:  Golden West (Luca De Vivo, Eddie Malick, Garrett Pickford, Miso Halac) 3:30.50.

Day 2

Women's 200-yard Medley Relay: Golden West (Margaret Dix, Taylor Morton, Gabriela Cabrera, Brooke Roy) 1:50.63

Men's 200-yard Medley Relay: Golden West (Luca De Vivo, Eddie Malick, Garrett Pickford, Duncan Burrows) 1:34.72

Jade Morton (2:08.96) finished in second place in the women's 200 Individual Medley, teammate Gabriela Cabrera took fifth in the 50 Butterfly (26.33)

David Jorth took sixth place in the men's 200-yard Freestyle with a time 1:41.92.

Freshman Taylor Morton (33.47) finished in sixteenth place in the women's 50 Breast, while Sophomore Eddie Malick took seventh place in the men's 100 Breast in a time of 58.53.

In backstroke freshman Margaret Dix swam a 28.41 in the 50-yard backstroke to earn her sixth place and sophomore Luca De Vivo rounded out the field in eighth place in the men's 100-yard backstroke with a time of 52.98

In the last event of the night, nearly one hour after the last individual event was swum, the Golden West College 800-yard Free Relay Teams entered the water.  The women's team comprised of Jade Morton (1:54.83), Mikaela Jensen (2:00.65), Saibrah White (1:59.58), Gabriela Cabrera (1:57.21) posted a time of 7:52.27 to earn them second place and a silver medal.  The men's team (David Jorth (1:42.52), Miso Halac (1:44.72), Luca De Vivo (1:45.73), Garrett Pickford (1:47.05))took sixth place with a time of 7:00.02

Day 3

New State Meet Record 1650--Jade Morton, Golden West, 17:04.70

Jade Morton held the state record at 17:03.06 performed at the Orange Empire Conference Championships, and added the state meet record to her mantle, breaking an 11-year mark set by another Rustlers swimmer, Micha Burden. Morton smashed the old mark by an impressive 11 seconds (Burden's time was 17:15.69). Jade's victory was by a margin of 43.40 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Samantha Elam (LA Pierce, 18:07.36). It was Morton's second win at the state meet as she also scored a gold medal in the 500 freestyle (4:57.32) on Thursday.

David Jorth took home second place in the men's 1650  and earning him a spot in the Golden West College's Top Ten Swim Times.  In the 200 backstroke, Luca De Vivo won consolation finals by two seconds (1:54.46) also placing him on GWC's Top Ten list.  Sophomore Eddie Malick pulled away from the pack and took 2nd place in the 200 breast (2:04.60).

Golden West Women's Swim Team took home 4th place honors at the CCCAA Swimming and Diving State Meet, while the men's team place 8th in the state.  Sophomore Jade Morton earned herself Women's Performance of the Year for her 1650-yard State Record Swim.
