
Golden West College is saddened to share the passing of former Men's Water Polo Coach (1966-1985), Tom Hermstad, who passed away on Saturday, March 29th at the age of 85.
Coach Hermstad "Herm" leaves behind a legacy that has profoundly shaped the college's athletic program and the sport of water polo. He was the visionary behind the creation of the Men's Water Polo program at Golden West College, launching it in 1966. As head coach from 1966 to 1985, Hermstad built a powerhouse program that gained national recognition. Under his leadership, the team amassed an impressive 407 victories, earned 17 consecutive conference championships, tallied 7 State Championships, and 7 Regional Championships. His unwavering commitment to excellence made Golden West a dominant force in collegiate water polo.

After retiring from coaching, Hermstad served in two administrative roles at Golden West College: Athletic Director and Acting Vice President of Instruction, helping to guide the college's academic and athletic vision until his retirement in 2001.
Hermstad's impact extended far beyond Golden West. Internationally recognized for his expertise and integrity, he officiated in four Olympic Games as a water polo referee—in Munich (1972), Montreal (1976), Los Angeles (1984), and Seoul (1988). His involvement on the global stage helped elevate the standard and visibility of the sport in the United States.
Tom Hermstad will be remembered not only for his remarkable achievements but for the passion and dedication he brought to the Golden West Community. He was a mentor to many, a leader in his field, and a cherished member of Seal Beach and Huntington Beach community.
