Baseball: Mattson Throws a Gem as the Offense Scores Late to Seal Victory

Huntington Beach, Calif. - Golden West's starting pitcher Luke Mattson throws seven solid innings scattering seven hits and surrendering a lone run to earn his first victory of the season 6-4 over Glendale.

Jeremiah Vison got the Rustler offense excited early as he led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple to right center field. Logan Mahaffy immediately cashed in on the RBI opportunity with a ground ball out to second base giving Golden West an early 1-0 lead. Mattson's lone run surrendered came in the third inning off of a solo homerun from Glendales Lucas Sakay to tie the game 1-1.

The Rustlers regained the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ezele Wicks led off with a line drive double down the left field line. After a throwing error by Glendale's third baseman that allowed Wicks to advance to third and Nick Dayton to reach second safely, Anthony Marquez hit a long sacrifice fly to the left field fence plating a tagging Wicks to take the lead 2-1. Golden West would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Austin Schell hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Michael Santorelli hit a RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1.

Glendale was able to cut into the lead in the top of the eighth inning with a two out, two RBI single making it a 4-3 ball game. But the Rustler offense would respond in the bottom half of the frame with two big insurance runs thanks to a couple errors from the Glendale defense. Reliever Eric Romo came in for Golden West in the ninth inning to close out the 6-4 victory.
