Huntington Beach, CA – The California Community College Baseball Coaches Association (CCCBCA) is proud to announce the induction of longtime Golden West College head baseball coach Bert Villarreal into its prestigious Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place on Friday, May 23, 2025, recognizing Villarreal's remarkable career and lasting impact on community college baseball.
Coach Villarreal amassed 626 career victories over 32 seasons as the Rustlers' head coach with two Orange Empire Conference Championships (2004 and 2015) and a state championship run in 2016. Having led the program since 1989, Villarreal is only the second head coach in Golden West baseball history, following the legendary Fred Hoover, for whom the Rustlers' baseball field is named. His legacy at Golden West College extends even further, as he first joined the program as a player in 1981 before transitioning into coaching as an assistant in 1985.
"Bert is Golden West baseball," said current head coach Drew Ramos. "His impact on young men's lives over that span is truly something special. His guidance, mentorship, and friendship have allowed me to really grow as a coach, man, and father."
Under Villarreal's leadership, Golden West College became a pipeline for student-athletes pursuing baseball at higher levels. More than 300 of his players advanced to four-year institutions, including 140 at the Division I level. Additionally, over 50 Rustlers signed professional contracts, with seven making it to the major leagues. Among them, local standout Chris Devenski won a World Series championship with the Houston Astros in 2017 and was selected as an American League All-Star that same year.
Beyond the diamond, Villarreal has been a cornerstone of the Golden West athletic community. He has selflessly dedicated his time to supporting not only his players but also the entire athletic department. Whether providing guidance, offering a helping hand, or ensuring his team was ready to assist with campus needs, his presence was a constant source of leadership and reliability.
Reflecting on his induction, Villarreal expressed his gratitude: "I am so humbled to be selected for this incredible honor. To be able to join such a distinguished fraternity of men that have made an impact on young men is a privilege and an honor for me, my family, and Golden West College. This is a tribute to all of my assistant coaches, players, and support staff at Golden West. I feel truly blessed to be in such a special group of men!"
The CCCBCA Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to California community college baseball. Coach Villarreal's dedication, success, and lifelong commitment to developing young athletes make him a fitting addition to this esteemed group.
