Riverside, Calif - The Golden West College football team had been able to escape the perils of offensive inconsistency for much of the season, but that ended Saturday night in Riverside.
The Rustlers had moments, but could not score in the most important stages of its 27-17 loss to Riverside City College in the Southern California Bowl, which served as a regional semifinal. This is the first bowl game Golden West has been apart of since playing in the Avacado Bowl in 1976.
Golden West (9-2) tied the score, 17-17, with a 27-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chris d'Entremont to Kyrel Brown with 7:01 remaining, but could not score in its final three possessions.
Riverside (10-1) capitalized on d'Entremont's interception deep in Golden West territory with a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Skyler Howard to Kenny Torrance to go ahead, 24-17, with 4:56 left, then sealed it with a 29-yard field goal with 1:41 left.
D'Entremont accounted for almost all of the Rusters' offense with 284 yards and two touchdowns on 27-of-46 passing, while the rushing game was limited to 39 yards on 33 carries. Brown had eight receptions for 114 yards.
Howard countered with three touchdowns and 198 yards through the air on 17-of-19 passing.
"It's tough to go out this way, but the season was so special," Golden West coach Nick Mitchell said. "Every week, people figured this was the week it was going to stop, but we ended up in the state playoffs."
