Rustlers Put the Squeeze on Citrus

Rustlers Put the Squeeze on Citrus

Golden West 29, Citrus 22:

Quest Truxton scored two touchdowns within a span of less than a minute late in the fourth quarter to give the Rustlers a dramatic win at Citrus.

The Rustlers trailed Citrus by eight points with less than four minutes to play. But Truxton caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Adam Vance with 3:23 to play, and Josh Smith's extra-point run tied the game.

After a defensive stand on the next possession, Truxton scored the game winner on a 74-yard punt return with 2:06 to play to lift Golden West to the victory. The Rustlers (3-0) trailed 15-0 at halftime, but rebounded late thanks to Truxton's two touchdowns and a Kory Garcia 82-yard interception return for a TD.

"They outplayed us for three quarters, but we're leaving here with a win," Golden West College coach Nick Mitchell said. "Quest came up huge and he's our go-to guy, but so did our defense late and our special teams."

Truxton caught four passes for 62 yards and now has five touchdowns in the first three games.

"It's always exciting to win a game in the last couple minutes," Truxton said. "We didn't come out with enough fire to start the game, but I'm glad we finished."

Vance finished 15 of 22 for 252 and the score. His favorite target was Jordan Veasey, who caught a game-high eight passes for 124 yards.

Brian Meyette was 24 of 40 for 172 yards and two touchdowns for Citrus.

He threw TD passes of 9 and 8 yards, but his only interception of the game changed everything when Garcia brought it back 82 yards for the score.

Golden West had the ball nearly 15 minutes less than Citrus (0-3), but the Rustlers move on unscathed and travel to Grossmont next Saturday.
