After being shutout in the first half, Golden West mounted an incredible second half comeback, but it was not enough to keep the Bell losing 17-14 to Orange Coast.
The Rustlers got off to a not-so-stellar start allowing a 48-yard passing touchdown on the first drive of the game. Orange Coast added a 28-yard field goal in the second quarter to make the score 10-0 at halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, Golden West scored quick with a 4-yard rush by Josh Smith on the first drive. Smith added another rushing score in the fourth quarter, this one of the 2-yard variety, to take a 14-10 lead.
Penalties doomed the Rustlers on the final drive of the game. Most notably, a late hit on the Pirates' quarterback moved Orange Coast into the red zone. Quarterback Mason Dossey took full advantage and tossed what ended up being a game-winning 3-yard touchdown with 18 seconds remaining.
Rustlers' kick returner Jordan Veasy brought the ball passed the 50-yard-line and a personal foul put the ball at the Orange Coast 25-yard-line with 5 seconds left. Humberto Maciel was summoned to tie the game, but his kick was no good.
Golden West travels to Saddleback next Saturday. A win in that game would create the possibility of a three-way tie for the National Southern League title.
