Football: Espinoza Throws for 2 TD's and Runs for Another in Road Win

Culver City, Calif. - The Golden West College football squad took to the road in search of their first win of the season at West LA College. They came home as 34-12 victor's and looking to even out their record in week 4 at Bakersfield. 

Sophomore quarterback Nathaniel Espinoza had a good day throwing the ball as he completed 20 of his 33 pass attempts for 230 yards and connecting for two touchdowns while scampering 30 yards for a rushing touchdown. 

The Rustler (1-2) offense was able to move the ball in the first quarter but couldn't get in the endzone, so they turned to place kicker Jose Arrendondo, who hit a pair of field goals from 35 yards and 44 yards to give Golden West a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Then Espinoza and the offense hit quick following a short West LA (1-2) offensive possession with a 41 yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Wright two plays into the second quarter to build a 12-0 lead. 

After another defensive stop for the Rustlers that shut down the West LA offense the entire first half, the offensive drive of the game ensued. Espinoza led a balanced attack of seven rushes and six passes on their way to a 13 play, 98 yard touchdown drive culminating with a five yard touchdown pass to KC Carr to extend the Rustlers first half lead, 18-0. Arrendondo would nail another field before halftime, a 26 yarder to give the Rustlers a comfortable 21-0 lead at the half. 

West LA struck first in the second half on a long 48 yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 21-6 after a blocked extra point attempt. 

JJ Barajas and the Rustler defense got into the endzone to start the fourth quarter with a 13 yard interception taken back to the house for a 27-6 lead. However, West LA would answer right back 10 seconds later with a 66 yard touchdown pass to make it a 27-12 ball game. Then to put the final touches on this victory, Espinoza scored on 30 yard touchdown run with just under three minutes left in the game for a 34-12 win. 

The defense had four interceptions on the day while recording a season high three sacks and 10 tackles for a loss. 

NEXT: Golden West will travel to Bakersfield College for a 6pm kickoff in week 4.
