No. 4 Golden West looks for fifth straight win, hosts Cerritos on Saturday

No. 4 Golden West looks for fifth straight win, hosts Cerritos on Saturday

No. 4 state-ranked Golden West College (6-1, 4-0 NCL) hosts Cerritos College (3-4, 2-2 NCL) in a National Central League game on Saturday (Nov. 9). Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Rustler Stadium in Huntington Beach.

The Rustlers look to keep their perfect record intact to set up showdown for the Central League championship next week at Mt. SAC in the regular-season finale. But first, Golden West will have to get past Cerritos and can't overlook a hungry Falcons football squad.

RANKINGS | Golden West moved up a spot after last week's win to the No. 4 position in the most recent California Community College Football Coaches Association (CCCFCA) State Poll. Cerritos is unranked in the poll.

LAST WEEK | Golden West held off No. 15 Long Beach at LBCC for a 31-24 win. Quarterback Will Burns put together another impressive game as he passed for 279 yards with 3 touchdowns and also ran for 111 yards and a TD.

The Rustlers took a 10-3 lead into halftime before both teams put up 21 points over the final two quarters. LBCC managed to score its final TD with 20 seconds remaining to make things interesting but the Rustlers recovered the onside kick attempt and held on for the win.

ABOUT CERRITOS The Falcons have had an inconsistent season, as evident by their 3-4 overall record. Cerritos has yet to win consecutive games this season but picked up a 33-24 victory at Citrus College in its last contest on Oct. 26.

The Falcons were scheduled to host San Bernardino Valley College last Saturday but that game was cancelled when SBVC suspended its program.

Cerritos is averaging 27.0 points and 353.7 yards per game this season while its defense is allowing 30.1 points and 391.1 yards per contest.

LAST YEAR | With the score tied and time winding down in the fourth quarter, Rustlers' quarterback Parker Awad hit receiver Tyler Hampton for a game-winning 23-yard touchdown with just one second left on the clock to stave off overtime and give No. 7 state-ranked GWC a hard-fought 21-14 win at Cerritos last season. The victory was also No. 100 in the career of Golden West head coach Nick Michell.

Last year's win by Golden West snapped a three-game losing streak by the Rustlers to the Falcons.

UP NEXT | The Rustlers are set to close out the regular season next Saturday (Nov. 16) at Mt. San Antonio College. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut. The game will likely decide the National Central League champion and an automatic bid into the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
