No. 4 Golden West clashes with No. 1 Mt. SAC for league title, playoff berth

HUNTINGTON BEACH – For the second season in a row, the National Central League championship, as well as a SoCal playoff berth, will be decided on the final game of the regular season between No. 4 state-ranked Golden West College and No. 1 Mt. San Antonio College.

The 8-1 Rustlers travel to face the 9-0 Mounties on Saturday (Nov. 16) for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut. Both squads enter the contest with 6-0 records in Central League play. The winner takes the Central League title and the league's automatic spot in the upcoming four-team Southern California Regional Playoffs.

RANKINGS | Both Golden West and Mt. SAC held their No. 4 and No. 1 rankings in the most recent California Community College Football Coaches Association (CCCFCA) State Poll.

LAST WEEK | Golden West rolled to its sixth straight win, a 34-7 rout over Cerritos College in its final regular-season home game last Saturday. Quarterback Will Burns ran for 3 touchdowns and passed for another to help leads the Rustlers to the win.

After a scoreless opening quarter, the two squads broke through for touchdowns, including a 1-yard TD run by Burns, to go into halftime tied up at 7-7.

But Golden West came alive over the final two quarter to cruise to the victory. The Rustlers outscored Cerritos 27-0 in the second half. The GWC defense was solid once again, holding its opponent to 10 points or less for the fourth time this season.

ABOUT MT. SAC | The Mounties cruised to a 44-14 win over visiting Long Beach City College last Saturday. Mt. SAC did its damage on the ground as it totaled 291 yards rushing in the contest. Devin Miles led with 195 yards and a TD on 19 carries. Jayson Cortes also ran 20 times for 100 yards.

 The Mounties defense allowed a pair of passing touchdowns put gave up a net 0 yards rushing to Long Beach.

Mt. SAC is averaging 436.1 yards of offense and 45.0 points per game while its defense is allowing 254.1 yards and 14.0 points per game this season.

LAST YEAR | Mt. SAC took the league title and playoff spot with a 33-21 win over Golden West in Huntington Beach last season. The Rustlers fell behind early and couldn't erase a 13-0 second-quarter deficit.

UP NEXT | Regardless of Saturday's outcome, the Rustlers are a lock to play in a postseason bowl game for the fourth straight season. Playoff and Bowl game matchups will be announced by the 3C2A on Sunday.
