Golden West Clinches No. 1 Spot in OEC

Golden West closed the game against Irvine Valley strong, scoring three goals in the final 25 minutes to earn a 4-1 victory over the Lasers on Friday at IVC.

The win clinched the conference title outright for Golden West with two matches still to play. The Rustlers, ranked third in the state and first in Southern California, improved their record to 14-1-3 overall and 11-0-1 in conference.

It was Golden West's fourth consecutive victory and 17th straight match without a defeat. The Rustlers' only loss was a 2-0 defeat in the first match of the season at Cerritos.

Irvine Valley gave Golden West all it could handle in the first half. The Lasers got on the board first in the 14th minute. Freshman Joe Rousseau was taken down in the box and sophomore Alan Banda converted the penalty kick, beating GWC keeper Antonio Flores with a left-footed shot to the left side.

Golden West tied the score in the 29th minute. Victor Velazquez's shot hit off the crossbar and bounced down right in front of the goal where Eduardo Almaraz headed it in. The two teams went into the half tied, 1-1.

It was all Golden West in the second half. The Rustlers out-shot Irvine Valley, 12-1, in the final 45 minutes.

Golden West got the game-winner from Irvin Guaderrama in the 65th minute and then Andres Perez and Gabriel Barraga added goals to close out the scoring.
