Men's Soccer Start the Season With a Win

The Golden West College Rustlers opened up their season with a 2-1 win over LA Mission, who entered the match with a record of 1-1. The game started at a frantic pace while the rustlers got some first-game jitters out of their system. LA Mission struck early with a 15th minute goal from the left side that dipped just over the outstretched fingers of Freshman Goalkeeper David Elias. The Rustlers kept their heads up high though and continued to push for an equalizer. Despite several attempts to attack the opposing goal and large portions of control, the Rustlers entered halftime down 1-0.

After some halftime adjustments, the Rustlers came out strong and, in the 53rd minute were awarded a free kick after Freshman Justin Funes was brought down from behind on his way toward goal. Up steps Fidel Nieves with a great free kick to beat the LA Mission wall and Goalkeeper to tie up the match at 1-1. The Rustlers continued to pound away at a stubborn LA Mission defense when, in the 84th minute, Freshman Matt Lane was able to get his head onto a beautiful cross from Will Lopez to put the Rustlers ahead 2-1. Despite an increased attacking effort by LA Mission, the Rustlers were able to stand strong for the win.

The next home game for the Rustlers will be played on Friday September 6th at 3:00pm.
