M Swim: Rustlers Earn a Second Place Finish In Early Season Invite
Costa Mesa, Calif. - The Golden West College Men's Swim team ventured to Orange Coast College on Friday, February 24 to compete in The Golden West College Sprint Meet. The change in venue was necessary due to repair work on the Rustlers' facility not being completed. In spite of harsh conditions, a spitting rain and cold temperatures throughout the day, the team edged Palomar and Riverside CC for second place overall. Orange Coast won with 357.5 points, GWC amassed 226 while Palomar (218) and RCC (201.5) completed the top four teams on the mens' side.

Event winners included Srboljub Filipović in the 200 IM (2:00.75) and Nolan Chomin taking the 500 free (5:00.09) along with the 800 free relay team of Nico D'Angelo, Chomin, Tommy Kelly and Filipović who cruised to a victory with a time of 7:38.57. Runner-up finishes for Golden West included Keiden Sutanto's 53.57 100 fly and Alec Johnson's 50 fly (26.74). D'Angelo posted the third fastest 50 fly (26.80). The 200 medley relay team of Kelly, Filipović, Sutanto and Thomas Woodley posted a 1:42.01 for third overall. The same quartet came in third in the 400 medley relay as well with a time of 3:47.24. The final third place finish came in the final event of the day as the Rustlers posted a 3:30.65 time in the 400 free relay with a foursome composed of Dangelo, Filopovic, Kelly and Sutanto.

Head Coach Tracy Maurer commented that he was pleased with the team's overall progress and that they had improved quite a bit in the two weeks since the team's first meet at Riverside. While grateful to be able to train at a nearby high school facility all season, Maurer acknowledges that it will be beneficial to get back to the home pool. The hope is to be back on campus early in the upcoming week.

The Rustlers are back in the pool competeing on March 3rd the Orange Empire Conference Invite #1 at Orange Coast College for a 9am start.
