Pirates Go Down With The Ship

Huntington Beach, Calif. - Thirteen different Rustlers were able to score as the Golden West men's water polo team cruised by visiting Orange Coast College 20-5, Wednesday, Oct 17.  The Rustlers improved to 16-0 with the win while the loss drops the Pirates to 6-3 on the year.

Sophomore Ricardo Guimaraes added a hat trick while Kris Laczkovics, Scotty Silvas, John Lovat, Robert Schatz, and Sean Grab contributed two goals apiece.  

The first quarter saw an offensive explosion as the Rustlers jumped out to an 8-1 lead.  Golden West opened on a 4-0 run thanks to the Rustlers relentless counter attacks.  Orange Coast finally got on the board with a score from Trevor McGhie, but the Rustlers would answer back with another 4-0 run to put them up 8-1 at the end of the first.  

Golden West controlled the second period, shutting out the Pirates while adding five more goals in the books.  Freshman John Lovat and Sean Grab put away two goals each while Sophomore Austin Ringheim tallied one goal.  The third quarter was much the same as the Rustlers added five more goals, giving Golden West a 18-3 lead heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was not as eventful as the previous three, as the Rustlers moved the ball using the clock and only netted two goals in the final frame to put the Rustlers up 20-5.

Golden West had four different goalies tend cage.  Marton Szabo had two blocks, while Nate Sfreddo block the only shot on cage during the second quarter as the Rustler held the Pirates scoreless in the second period.  In the third, Nick Lopez had three saves while Doug Saavedra finished the game for the Rustlers in the four period and racked up two more saves.

Next the Rustlers face Grossmont and LA Valley on Friday, Oct 19 at home in the Golden West Tournament.  Game times are 7:30AM and 2:00PM respectively.
