Golden West Powers Past Grossmont

Huntington Beach, Calif. - Golden West men's water polo played the first game of the GWC Tournament against Grossmont Friday morning. Both teams are ranked at the top of their respective conferences, but it was Golden West who finished with a 22-9 victory.

Kris Laczkovics scored four goals and freshman Sean Grab added three goals, good for his first hat trick of the season.

The Rustlers wasted little time in the water, getting a quick jump on the Griffins, leading the first quarter 6-2.

The Griffins made their strongest play after the half with four goals in the third quarter. Grossmont's Steve Perdew, Brent Kerrigan and Daniel Straub contributed two goals apiece. But the Rustler's were relentless, responding in the third quarter with seven goals, giving Golden West a decisive lead 17-9. The fourth quarter featured the strength of the Rustler defense, rejecting every scoring attempt for the Griffins.

Golden West had Marton Szabo and Nate Sfreddo in the goal for the game, each of whom had career high saves.
