Golden West downs West Valley and Diablo Valley College

Saratoga, Calif. – Golden West traveled to Saratoga to play the top two teams in the Northern California.  In their first match, No. 3 Golden West squeaked out a 10-9 win over No. 4 West Valley.

Golden West found themselves behind 5-3 at halftime, but a strong third quarter outscoring West Valley 6-3, brought the Rustlers back into the game with help from Sophomore Tommy Grall who netted two goals in the third to put Golden West up 9-8.

The fourth quarter looked to be more of a swim meet as both teams continued to push the counter but struggled to capitalize on their opportunities.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nate Sfreddo picked up 8 saves in goal.

For the second contest of the day, Golden West faced No.1 seed Diablo Valley College in yet another one goal decision.  But once again the Rustlers would find away to secure the win outscoring their opponent 3-1 in the third quarter.

This was the first matchup between these two teams for the 2013 season.  Diablo Valley would strike early and hold a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.  The Rustlers continued to work hard, playing team defense and was able to stop multiple scoring opportunities by the Vikings.  Golden West found themselves down 4-3 at half.

But similar to their first game of the day, Golden West surged ahead in the third quarter out scoring Diablo Valley 3-1 and led for the first time that afternoon, 6-5. Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth quarter, and the final score ended up with the Rustlers on top.

Freshman goalkeeper Itai Cohen tallied 9 saves as the Rustlers improve to 14-1 on the season.
