Golden West defeats Long Beach City 9-5 to win SoCal Championships

The No. 1 Golden West College men's water polo team made a defensive statement in the Southern California Regional Championships holding No. 2 Long Beach City scoreless in the first period.  The Rustlers 9-5 victory over Long Beach City College marked their 28th Regional Title.  With the win, Golden West enters the State Tournament as the No. 1 seed from the South.

The Rustlers scored three unanswered goals in the first period.  Freshman Ciaran Wolohan found the back of the net first with a shot from outside 8 meters putting Golden West on the board 1-0 with 6:46 left in the opening period.  Ben Toth scored on a power play for the Rustlers to make the score 2-0.  It was Wolohan again with his second goal of the evening to put the Rustlers up three.

To open the second period, the Rustlers would score two more goals extending their lead 5-0 as Sophomore Aaron Polk and Ciaran Woolhan would rifle two more past Long Beach City's goaltender.  The Rustlers would end the first half up 5-1.

The second half was much like the first as Golden West kept applying pressure on the counter scoring three consecutive goals to increase their lead 8-1.  The Rustlers would end up defeating Long Beach City 9-5 to be crowned the 2014 Southern California Regional Champions.

NEXT: Golden West will travel to Sacramento next weekend to competed in the CCCAA State Championships.
