Men's Water Polo Goes 4 for 4 in Cuesta

San Luis Obispo, Calif. – Golden West College(9-0, 1-0) men's water polo traveled to Cuesta College over the weekend and came home with four convincing wins.

The tournament got started Friday morning with a 16-6 win over LA Valley(2-6) as 10 different Rustlers scored. Peter Lovas got the scoring started as the Rustlers opened the match with five unanswered goals. LA Valley would find themselves down 10-4 at halftime as Alessandro Valania scored three first half goals. Golden West would surrender two second half goals to secure the 16-6 victory.

Game 2 on Friday afternoon saw Golden West remain unbeaten as they defeated San Joaquin Delta College(8-6, 0-1) 19-8. This time the Rustlers had a pair of pace setters in the first half as Tom McJannett and Matheus Santos netted 3 goals apiece in the first half to carry an 11-3 lead to halftime. Carlo Silvestre and James Brennan would net 2 goals apiece in the second half to propel the Rustlers to a 19-8 victory.

Saturday mornings match could be a preview to this year's state championship as Golden West faced off against Long Beach City College(6-1, 3-0) for the first time since losing in the state championship last season. It was the power of the Rustlers defense and goalie Josip Pezer that held Long Beach to a season low 6 goals. It was a total team effort as James Smith would score 2 first half goals to help hold a 6-2 lead at half for the Rustlers. Golden West just never allowed Long Beach to get within striking distance when the opportunities came around with their stifling defense to secure a 12-6 win.

To finish out the tournament Saturday afternoon Golden West matched up against a tough West Valley(9-2) team that had a 6-4 lead after the first quarter. The Rustler defense would keep its composer and shutout West Valley over the next 3 quarters to earn a 12-6 victory. Matheus Santos, James Smith, and Peter Lovas each recorded 3 goals to pace the Rustler offense.
