M Water Polo: Sweeps Day One of GWC Tournament

Huntington Beach, Calif. - The quest for a fifth straight CCCAA state championship started early Friday morning when the Golden West men's water polo program beat Rio Hondo 19-4 and then LA Valley 17-5. 

In game one against Rio Hondo, the Rustlers gained control from the onset as they took a commanding 10-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. The two-meter duo of John MacDonald and Breno Tenet each found the back of the net twice in the opening quarter. It was freshman Graham Cope who took over in the final three quarters, netting a team high six goals in the game. The defense stayed strong only allowing 12 shots in 48 minutes of play to keep the Rustler offense always attacking in the 19-4 victory. 

In game two it was a similar script as Golden West jumped out to an early 8-1 lead after the opening quarter. This time is was Itamar Kolodny and Andrew Higginson who lead the Rustler attack with a pair of goals in the first quarter. The offense continued to attack in the second quarter adding another five goals for a 13-3 halftime lead. Golden West would record another four goals in the second half to cruise in a 17-5 victory. 

Golden West will be back in action tomorrow morning bright and early at 7am against Saddleback College and then again at 1130am against Long Beach City College.
