Softball Splits the Weekend at Glendale

Glendale, Calif. - The Golden West College softball program started it's 2018 season with a four game weekend tournament at Glendale College. The Rustler's came away 2-2 beating Oxnard College Friday morning 4-2 and beating Barstow College 10-6 Saturday morning.

In the win against Oxnard the Rustler's showed their offensive tenacity late in the game as they were able to plate three run in the fifth inning and get an insurance run across in the top of the sixth inning to earn a 4-2 victory. Freshman starting pitcher Cami Cohen pitched a complete game giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking two.

Game two Friday morning saw the Rustler's fall to Long Beach City College 13-0.

Saturday saw the offense come alive in their first game of the day as they scored in every inning except the fourth en route to their second victory in as many days over Barstow College 10-6. After a quick two outs to start the bottom of the first inning Alyssa Aragon smacked a single to spark a rally. Maddy Schicker followed with a single of her own to advance Aragon to second; that setup Jenna Terrones' RBI single to score Aragon and advance Schicker to second. Jannelle Watson came to plate two batters later as Rheanna Davis walked and clobbered a two RBI single to give the Rustler's a 3-1 lead. Courtney Reed kept the slugging going with her own RBI single to extend the lead 4-1 after the first inning.

Barstow got some momentum going in the third inning as they were able to plate four runs on four hits and an error to tie the game at 5-5 heading into the bottom of the third. Golden West responded with three runs scored from five hits in the bottom of the frame to take back the lead for good at 8-5. Alexa Reyes provided the two RBI base knock to push the Rustlers ahead and then after a pitching change Golden West would score again thanks to a wild pitch. The offense would tack on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth on their way to a six inning victory 10-6. Nine of the ten runs scored for the Rustlers came with two outs.

The Rustler's later that morning played LA Mission and fell 11-4. Isabella Ramirez went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's to lead the offense with Reyes who also notched two hits in the ball game. Jennifer Eberhardt was the starting pitcher and suffered her first loss of the season while pitching a complete game.

NEXT: The Rustlers will host San Diego Mesa at 3pm and Rio Hondo at 7pm on Wednesday January 31st.
