Softball: Splits DH, Eberhardt Pitches a Three Hit Shutout

Huntington Beach, Calif. - The Golden West Softball team almost earned its first doubleheader sweep Friday against San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) but came up just short in game one losing 6-5.

Golden West got an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Jenna Terrones smacked an RBI single to score Alyssa Aragon who doubled to leadoff the inning. The Wolverines answered right back in the top of the second plating two runs to take the lead 2-1.

The game stayed quiet as both pitchers settled into a groove during the middle innings until the SBVC woke their bats up in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs on four hits to extend their lead to 6-1. That was enough of a wake up call for the Rustler offense as they got going in the bottom of the inning scoring four runs as well on five hits. Alexa Reyes led things off in a single and then was able to steal second base a couple pitches later to move into scoring position. Terrones would then trade places with Reyes after she wack an RBI double to the left center field gap. Isabella Ramirez followed with a hit by pitch and Rheanna Davis then hit a single to load the bases for Courtney Reed. Reed would hit a RBI single driving in Terrones from third and advancing the runners. Vanessa Escandon came through in the clutch blasting a two RBI single to make it a 6-5 ball game. However, thats all the Rustler offense could muster as the Wolverines were able to kill the sixth inning rally and retire the offense in order in the bottom of the seventh.

The Rustler's didn't mess around in game two as Jennifer Eberhardt pitched a complete game three hit shutout to earn the 8-0 win.

The offense stayed hot throughout the game as they were able to score a run or more in all six innings. Janelle Watson led all batters with three hits in the game as she tallied the games first RBI in the bottom of the first inning scoring Reyes to take a 1-0 lead. The big inning occured in the fifth, as the Rustlers smacked three doubles in the frame to extend their lead to 7-0. Watson led off the inning with a double, Reed smacked an RBI double two batters later, and Escandon followed Reed's RBI double with a RBI double of her own to highlight the fifth inning. In fitting fashion, Terrones would smack the teams fourth double of the game to clitch the 8-0 mercy win in the sixth inning.

NEXT: Golden West will travel to San Diego City College and play two games. Game 1 will start 9am against San Diego City College and game 2 will start at 12pm against Moorpark.
