Softball: Vasquez Walks-Off in Game Two to Salvage a Split in Opening Weekend

San Diego, Calif. - The Golden West College softball team had a doubleheader Monday as they competed in tournament play at San Diego Mesa. They opened up Saturday morning with a 5-3 loss to SD Mesa. However, they ended the day by persevering through extra innings against Rio Hondo for a 10-9 victory to start the season 1-1.

Game 1

The Rustlers fell behind early by allowing an unearned run to score in the bottom of the 2nd.  They would keep it close by a score of 2-1 until the bottom of the 5th when San Diego Mesa would score 3 runs in the inning off of a double, error and a single. The Rustlers would make a push to comeback in the 6th scoring 2 runs from a Madalyn Burton, who had all 3 RBI's on the day. However, it would be enough as they would fall short in the end 5-3

Game 2

In the 2nd game of the day the against Rio Hondo the Rustlers jumped out to an early lead 3-1 lead after the first inning by way of a Jasmine Vasquez RBI single and a Jenn Swartz 2 RBI triple.  Starting pitcher Michelle Sheedy would then give Golden West 5 consecutive shutout innings while the offense would tac on another run in the 4th giving them a 4-1 lead going into the 7th. However, the Rustlers couldn't close out the game giving up 3 runs in the top of the 7th and being shut down in the bottom half of the inning. The game would continue until the 10th inning when the Rustlers Kaylee Hammond would score the game winning run off a Jasmine Vasquez walk-off single.

Golden West opens up their new ballpark in the home opener this Thursday at home with a game against Grossmont.
