Softball: Gets Back to Winning Ways with OEC Win

Huntington Beach, Calif. - Golden West College softball broke their six-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over Saddleback at home Wednesday.

The Rustlers successfully rounded third and crossed the plate four times in response to five defensive errors by Saddleback.

They jumped on the board first in the third inning off a throwing error by Saddleback's right fielder. Brooklyn Gregory reached second base on the throw, allowing Isabella Green to score.

Makayla Weiser took advantage of another error in the fourth inning to put the Rustlers ahead 2-1. Weiser went 2-for-3 in the box and caught an impressive performance from both Sennie Viramontes and Aolani Sua in the circle.

Sennie Viramontes got the start for Wednesday's matchup, earning her first win of the season. Viramontes saw one out short of a full seven innings, allowing eight hits, two runs, one earned run and one strikeout.

Viramontes also had success at the plate, going 2-for-2 and working the count to earn a walk.

Aolani Sua left shortstop to pitch in relief for the Rustlers with two outs in the seventh inning. She earned her first save of the season with a strikeout to end the game.

Sua was 1-for-3 in the batter's box, driving in one of the two earned runs for the Rustlers off a base hit in the fifth inning.

The Rustlers scored three more runs off of a hit and three defensive errors in the fifth inning to extend their lead 6-2. Green stole third base before she crossed home plate on an error by the catcher.

Defensive errors cost both of these teams at least one run, but the Rustlers were able to defend their lead with solid pitching and smart base running.

With this win, the Rustlers improve to 9-7 overall and 2-3 in Orange Empire play. They will return to the field Friday as they visit Cypress College for a 2 p.m. game.
