Rustlers Take Series from Bobcats

Huntington Beach, CA - Golden West softball (13-11, 7-7 OEC) won the series against the Saddleback Bobcats (10-16, 4-9 OEC), 7-1.

The Rustlers welcomed the Bobcats for the middle game of the three-game series at Golden West College. At the Saddleaback on Tuesday, the Rustlers defeated the Bobcats, 2-0. In the top of the first, Allyssa DeMayo knocked in the first run of the game with an RBI double to score Shelby Jacobsz, 1-0. For the second run, Desyree Arizmendi hit a sacrifice fly out to allow Jacobsz to cross home for the games second and final run, 2-0. 

Golden West was successful in the opener and brought the series to Golden West College as they looked to take the first two games. It was a quiet start for both sides offensively as Arizmendi kept the Bobcats bats scoreless through four frames. In the bottom of the fourth, the Rustlers were able to put damage on the scoreboard. 

A. DeMayo singled to get a leadoff base runner for the Rustlers and advanced to second on a throwing error to first. She stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly out from Mia Duda to left field, 1-0. Golden West was not done in the fourth as they were able to plate 

Maya Magadaleno smacked a single and Arizmendi followed with a ball launched over the left fielder's head. With two runs in scoring position, Mackenzie King roped the ball to right field for an RBI single, 2-0. Candice DeMayo hit an RBI single to extend the lead to three as Arizmendi crossed home plate, 3-0. To cap the scoring in the fourth, Lillian Smith pinched hit and roasted a two-RBI double that scored C. DeMayo and Miriam Talstein, 5-0. 

Saddleback would tally a run in the top of the fifth from a double when the Golden West performed a successful relay to nail the runner at third for the final out, 5-1. Golden West responded in the bottom of the fifth with two runs. Duda and King each earned their second RBI on the day to grow the lead, 7-1. The Rustlers held off the Bobcats bats for the six run victory. 

A. DeMayo had a great day at the plate as she went 2-4 with two runs scored and a double. In her lone pinch hit at bat, Smith knocked in two RBIs. Duda earned two RBIs as King went 2-3 with two RBIs. The Rustlers won their seventh conference matchup and thirteenth game overall for the season as the team sits at fourth in the Orange Empire Conference. 

UP NEXT: Golden West will finish the series against Saddleback on the road on Friday, April 12th. First pitch will be at 2pm.
