Golden West Swats The Hornets

Huntington Beach, Calif. - The Rustlers have been revived with their first Orange Empire Conference win with a 3-2 victory at home against Fullerton Tuesday. The win evens out Golden West's overall record 7-7 with one tie for the season.

The Rustlers were the first to find the net with just 8 minutes gone on the game clock. Katie Fosmire (Cypress, Ca/Cypress HS) headed the ball over a Hornet player, and teammate Daisy Gutierrez (Compton, Ca/Dominguez HS) ran onto it, sending it past the keeper. Minutes later in the first quarter Rustlers had another opportunity to score as Gutierrez went one on one with Fullerton's goalkeeper, but her shot was wide. The Hornets scored on a penalty kick tying the game at one apiece.

In the second half, the Rustlers scored again with a goal from Kathleen Schultz (Garden Grove, Ca/Santiago, HS) who fired the ball to the far post. Marina Johnson (Los Alamitos, Ca/Los Alamitos HS) with the assist, passing the ball up field precisely to Schultz for the score.  Fullerton responded with a goal of their own and the score was tied again. The game winning goal came courtesy of Alina Aviles (Lakewood, Ca/Lakewood HS) who cut the ball behind the Hornet defender and beat the goalie to the near post.

Olivia Bedard (Long Beach, Ca/Millikan HS) turned away 4 of the 5 shots she faced in her 45 minutes in the net. Teammate Miljana Jocic (Long Beach, Ca/Mission HS) stopped 2 of the Hornets shots, only allowing 1 to escape her.

The women next travel to Irvine Valley, game time is 3pm.
