Rustlers Start Track and Field Season Strong

Golden West's Track and Field Team opened the 2015 season at Santa Ana College last week. The Rustlers faced off with Saddleback College, Riverside College and host Santa Ana College in the first Orange Empire Conference meet.

Leading the charge for Golden West was freshman Daria Sharova who took first place in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.01. Teammatte Elizabeth Cotociu finished in fifth place in the same event with a 17.21. Other top runners for the Rustlers were Shelby Pepper, who finished fourth in the 400 meter dash (1:11.95) and Raena Ramirez, who finished the 400 meter hurdles in 1:20.41 for fourth place.

On the field Sydney Hatton took first place in the javelin throw with a distance of 18.91m. Rebekah Lewis placed second in the discus throw with her 37.40m effort, and Freshman Alicia Arnett placed second in the pole vault (8-06.00) Cotociu, who also competes in the Heptathalon, took second in the high jump (1.48m), and second in long jump (5.05m).  

For the men's team Daniel Hernandez took first place in the javelin with a 55.75m throw. Sophomore Gavin Coath took first in the discus throw (45.19m) and fourth place in the hammer throw 47.69m as well as  in the shot put (13.73m)

Rustlers dominated the pole vault event with Andrew Gonzalez placing first with a 14-00.00 followed by Luis Alonso 13-06.00, good for second place. 


Next: The team will compete at Soka University on Feb. 14th at 8am.
