Golden West sweeps Cypress in home opener

Huntington Beach, Calif. - Golden West (8-0) started strong and kept momentum throughout the match on its way to sweeping Cypress (6-5) 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 at home.

Despite the close scores, it was all Rustlers from start to finish. Leading the charge was Huntington Beach native Jordyn Sanchez, who led with 18 kills and 4 service aces. Sanchez was also quite helpful on the defensive front with 13 digs. Helping Sanchez out was the squad's lone sophomore Tyler Davis. Davis recorded 10 kills, 3 aces and 6 digs.

Rounding out this match's contributors is middle blocker Drucilla Gauta. Gauta made up for her lack of blocks by being the second leading attacker. Her 15 kills out of 23 attempts adds up to a team best .565 hitting percentage. Also, setter Taylor Packer made sure Golden West was always on the offensive, recording 40 assists and 3 aces.

Leading the way defensively was the birthday girl, libero Kelynn Mullally. Mullally led with 14 digs and the Rustler defense recorded 48 digs total. Despite Gauta and fellow middle blocker Nikol Powers recording only one block a piece, 2 out of the teams total of 5, Golden West played great defense, they rarely trailed and put together multiple scoring streaks.

This Friday, 10/11, is a rivalry match one as Golden West travels to Orange Coast. The next home match is next Wednesday, 10/16, against Fullerton.
