Two matches, two sweeps for Rustlers

Two matches, two sweeps for Rustlers

Huntington Beach, Calif. - Solid play, friendly calls and a little luck allowed Golden West sweeps over San Diego City, 25-20, 26-24, 25-16, and Moorpark 25-16, 27-25, 28-26, co-hosting the Irvine Valley Quad Tournament at home.

Each set in the first match went back and forth at some point creating some exciting play. San Diego City (2-1) jumped out to a 6-point lead, but Golden West (3-0) was able to close the gap quickly and tied the score at 14-14. From there Ashley Pettibone caught fire and helped lead the Rustlers to a 25-20 victory.

It was the same story in the second set with the Knights owning a slight lead at the half way point. Since neither team was able to establish momentum, extra points were necessary to finish the set. Gabi Nguyen kept Golden West afloat for the duration of the match and produced the equalizer to give the Rustlers a 26-24 win.

Unlike the first two sets, Golden West jumped out to an early 5-point lead. San Diego City made a comeback to tie the set at 12-12, but the Rustlers bared down and went on a few scoring runs. This allowed Golden West to cruise to a 25-16 win and complete the sweep.

Golden West's (4-0) second match against Moorpark (0-2) was similar, but a bit more interesting. Set 1 was neck-and-neck at the beginning up until the tenth point. After that, Golden West jumped out to a 6-point lead and was able to sustain it en route to a 25-16 win.

Moorpark kept the Rustlers in check form that point on and had another 10-10 tie in the second set. The Raiders started to pull away late with a 20-18 lead, but Golden West never gave up and had a 24-22 match point. Unfortunately, defensive errors cost the Rustlers a conventional win, but were able to pull it off an extra point win of 27-25.

Golden West had the advantage in the third set jumping out to a 12-7 lead. The lead stayed steady until the twentieth point in which the Raiders tied the match. Fortunately, Golden West kept its focus, fought hard and emerged with a 28-26 win and the sweep.

The Rustlers will be away from home the next two weeks participating in tournaments at Fullerton and L.A. Pierce. Irvine Valley will greet Golden West for the next home match on Oct. 3 at 6 p.m.
