Rustlers Rebound with a Sweep

Rustlers Rebound with a Sweep

Huntington Beach, Calif. - After being swept last Friday at home, Golden West returned to its winning ways with a 25-15, 25-6, 25-15 sweep against Saddleback.

Golden West (9-2, 1-1) got off to a 4-0 start in the first set on the shoulders of master server Andrea Gonzalez. After Saddleback (2-5, 0-2) called a timeout, the Gauchos rallied and tied the score at 6-6, but the Rustlers regained momentum thanks to solid play on the outside from Ashley Pettibone and Gabby Nguyen. This led to a comfortable 25-15 win for Golden West, which set the tone for the remainder of the match.

Set 2 was all Rustlers from start to finish winning easily 25-6. Both Nguyen and Gonzalez provided the bulk of the offense and finished with sound numbers. Gonzalez patrolled the service line with 4 aces with Pettibone and Jasmine Hogan right behind her with 2 apiece. Overall, the team totaled 11 and at least 1 from six different players. Nguyen was a force from the outside tallying 12 kills and Daisy Gonzalez was the go-to player in the middle recording 5 kills and 2 blocks.

Like the set prior, the third one was all Rustlers getting off to an 8-3 start. When Saddleback started to creep back, Nguyen's attacks and Kelynn Mullally's fabulous defense prevented the Gauchos from putting together any sort of streak. Mullally would end the match with 19 digs, including a few divers that lead to scoring opportunities. Golden West was able to close out this set 25-15 and complete the sweep.

Golden West's next home match is this coming Wednesday, Oct. 15 against cross-town rival Orange Coast at 6 p.m.
