Inspiring play leads to upset victory

Golden West fought hard and played with heart en route to earning a 13-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-20 victory over Fullerton extending its winning streak to four on Sophomore Night at home.

Just like last Wednesday's contest against Cypress, Golden West (16-5, 8-4) was outplayed in the first set. Not one Rustlers' player had an answer for Fullerton's two-headed giant of Kelsey Smith and Alyssa Jensen who seemingly blocked every attack that came their way.

After huddling in between sets, Golden West came out for the second set with a new-found focus and intensity. Fullerton had a small lead throughout the majority of the set, but Golden West kept it close and eventually tied the score 21-21. What made the difference was the leadership and hustle of Kelynn Mullally. This and the solid offensive play of Ashley Pettibone and Gabi Nguyen led to a 25-23 victory, tying the match 1-1.

Golden West was not playing around in the third set and jumped out to a comfortable 11-3 lead as the Hornets took a timeout. Fullerton proved to not be taken lightly and closed the gap to 14-11 to force the Rustlers to call time. Consistent defense and solid play up front helped Golden West widen the gap and earn the 25-21 victory.

Neither team wanted to lose the fourth set, which featured many lead changes early and a 10-10 tie score. Golden West caught the edge a little during the middle and had a 20-18 lead. Reliable defense, outside offense and sound serves lead the Rustlers to a 25-20 win and the 3-1 upset.

Leading the way offensively was the duo of Pettibone and Nguyen producing 20 and 19 kills respectively. Andrea Gonzalez contributed well both offensively and as a helper recording 40 assists and 5 service aces. But the player who stood out by and large was Mullally. She came up with 14 digs in addition to exhibiting great leadership and intensity to help turn the Rustlers fortunes positive.

Golden West finishes its season on the road taking on Santa Ana Friday and Riverside Wednesday, Nov. 19.
