Rustler Volleyball Starts Season with a Sweep

Huntington Beach, CA- Golden West women's volleyball team had a strong showing to open its 2016-17 campaign. The Rustlers made quick work of visiting Palomar College, with a 3-0 sweep in a match that took less than two hours to complete.

The Rustlers (1-0) broke away early in the first two sets and rallied late in third set for a 25-15, 25-13, 25-21 victory. Golden West was paced by sophomore Cassidy Paperny and freshman Jasmine Gonzalez. Paperny had a team-high 13 kills and three blocks. Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan High) added 12 kills with nine digs and team-high five aces. Sophomore Kate Stanjevich had 23 assists and eight digs, sophomore Baileigh Graham had a team-high 20 digs with six assists and sophomore Akimi Fujikura had 12 assists, three digs and served four aces.

Golden West coach Bill Lawler was able to play nearly his entire roster and give his starters long breaks, with only Stanjevich and Gonzalez playing more than an hour.

The Rustlers continue their season at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7 with a match at home against San Diego City College.
