Women's Volleyball Sweeps Second Match

Huntington Beach, CA­ – Golden West's women's volleyball team remained unblemished after sweeping its second-consecutive match, 3-0, over visiting San Diego City College.

The Rustlers (2-0) have yet to lose a set this season, but had to work for their 25-20, 25-16, 26-18 victory.

Golden West led by seven points at 20-13in the first set, but San Diego City (1-2) pulled to within three points at 21-18 before the Rustlers were able to finish off the set.

Golden West's defense didn't allow San Diego City College to score more than three consecutive points in the second set. With the score 9-8, the Rustlers went on a 9-2 run to gain momentum and eventually close out the set.

Golden West never trailed in the third set, using a 13-4 run to build a 20-12 lead and eventually win the set and the match.

The Rustlers were led by sophomore Cassidy Paperny and freshman Jasmine Gonzalez. Paperny had a team­-high 10 kill, with two blocks. Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan High) added eight kills with 10 digs and three blocks. Sophomore Kate Stanjevich had 22 assists and nine digs, sophomore Baileigh Graham had a team­-high 19 digs with six assists and sophomore Megan Wiggins had 13 assists.

Golden West coach Bill Lawler gave credit to a spirited San Diego City College.

"They had good effort and good energy," Lawler said. "I think we came out a little flat and we had to match their energy."

 Paperny said the team's quick start has built the team's spirits.

"We definitely have a lot of confidence," Paperny said. "But we're humble and we know there are a lot of tough teams in our conference."

The Rustlers return home on Wednesday, Sept. 21 with a match at 6 p.m. against Antelope Valley College.
