Huntington Beach, CA ‑ Golden West women's volleyball team remained undefeated at home after a 3-0 sweep of visiting Antelope Valley College in a nonconference match. The Rustlers have yet to drop a set in their home gym thus far.
Golden West (5-1, 1-0 Orange Empire Conference) had to rally in the first set, but cruised in the second and third sets en route to a 25-17, 25-14, 25-16 victory. The Rustlers were paced by freshman Jasmine Gonzalez and sophomore Cassidy Paperny. Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan High) had a team-high 13 kills with six digs and two aces. Paperny had 12 kills and four digs. Sophomore Kate Stanjevich had a team-high 15 assists and 13 digs and sophomore Megan Wiggins had seven assists and two digs.
In the first set, Golden West rallied from 6-2 deficit to tie the score at 12-12. With the score 15-15, the Rustlers finished off the set with a 10-2 run, emphasized by Paperny killing a long rally to give Golden West a 22-17 lead. Sophomore Baileigh Graham served the final seven points of the set.
The Rustlers opened the second set on a 9-3 run and went on a 12-2 run to take a 21-5 lead. Golden West held off a late rally to close out the set.
In the third set, Golden West trailed 11-9, before going on an 11-1 run to take a 20-12 lead and eventually close out the set and the match.
NEXT: The Rustlers return at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30 with a conference match against Santa Ana College.
