Golden West Sends OCC Home in 3

Huntington Beach, CA – Golden West's women's volleyball team made quick work of visiting Orange Coast College in an Orange Empire Conference match.

The host Rustlers jumped out to an early lead in the first set and never looked back en route to a 25-10, 25-21, 25-17  sweep over the rival Pirates.

The victory put Golden West (10-2, 6-1 OEC) on a two-match winning streak. The Rustlers moved into sole possession of second place in the conference standings, just a game behind conference leading Cypress, with a match on Friday against the Chargers.

If Golden West was looking ahead to Friday's meeting, the Rustlers did their best to lay claim to being one of the best teams in the conference.

Golden West went on an 11-2 run in the first set to take a 17-8 lead and then went on an 8-2 run, with freshman Sydney Siegal (Thunderbird High/Phoenix) serving out the final seven points.

In the second set, the Rustlers trailed 10-7, but used a seven-point swing to take a 22-18 lead and hold off Orange Coast. Golden West never trailed in the third set. The Rustlers used an 8-4 run to take an 18-12 lead and cruise to win the set and match.

Golden West was led by sophomore Kate Stanjevich, who had 10 assists and two kills, with a team-high eight digs, three blocks and two aces. Sophomore Cassidy Paperny had a team-high 18 kills, with three digs and a block. Sophomore Megan Wiggins had a team-high 17 assists, with three digs. Freshman Jasmine Gonzalez (Long Beach Millikan High) added seven kills and seven digs. Freshman Ashliegh Atsaros (Huntington Beach High) had a team-high five blocks and two kills and Siegal had seven digs and had two aces.
